Never Alone Recovery

SUMMARY

This blog post highlights how wealth and fame can increase the risk of addiction due to stress, isolation, and easy access to substances. While celebrities face unique challenges, addiction can affect anyone—and recovery is always possible

Stories of celebrity substance use are nothing new. Stories about fame and mental health are often in the news, sparking questions about wealth and substance abuse. It seems like celebrity addiction comes with its own risk factors. But are famous and rich people more susceptible to drug addiction than others? Can celebrities also get dual diagnosis? These questions of stress and addiction in celebrities are worth investigating.

Do Wealthy People Suffer More From Addiction?

Wealthy people do not necessarily suffer more from addiction than anyone else, however, there are particular aspects of their addiction and its treatment unique to them. For example, wealth gives users greater access to drugs. Simultaneously, it blankets them from consequence. In addition, it fosters a culture of indulgence, as indicated by a 1982 New York Times article, which reported that cocaine use was pervasive in Hollywood, to the point where it was routinely sold on film sets.

It’s important to remember that wealth also means that someone is more likely to receive treatment for their substance use disorder. For example, a 2018 study found that fills for prescriptions for drugs used to treat mental health conditions including addiction were more popular in higher-income areas.

How Does Fame Affect Mental Health and Addiction?

Fame affects mental health and addiction in a number of ways. First of all, because of a person’s fame, they can experience a loss of privacy, causing stress. This public attention and scrutiny in and of itself can be overwhelming, causing increased feelings of pressure and negatively impacting a person’s mental health. Fame also has a tendency to isolate public figures, preventing them from having genuine relationships, and causing feelings of alienation, sadness, and emptiness. Individuals may also lose touch with their sense of reality or their sense of self. All of these factors can lead famous people to turn to substance abuse in order to cope.

What Factors Cause Addiction?

Addiction can be caused by a multitude of factors in addition to fame. A person may be genetically predisposed to substance use disorder, or may have been exposed to substances while in the womb. In addition, a person is more likely to use if their friends do. While this fact is true of anyone, it relates back to the impact of fame on substance use. For example, in the 1982 New York Times article, stunt women interviewed about drug use on set cited peer pressure, boredom, and an inability to cope with daily life as reasons for the popularity of drug use.

In addition to these factors, a study of 220 celebrities who died due to drug use between 1970 and 2015 found that 75% of celebrity deaths were men, with an average age of 38.6. Celebrities may also have excessively high levels of sensation-seeking and impulsivity, traits that are linked to addiction. As explored earlier, celebrities may also experience addiction due to the negative aspects of being a celebrity, leaving them to seek refuge with substance use.

Is there Hope?

When viewing the amount of risks celebrities must contend with when it comes to substance use disorder, it may seem like substance use disorder is an inevitable fact of their lives. However, that doesn’t mean they’ll end up using, and if they do, there is always hope of recovery. Rehab does work. For as many tragic cases end up in the news, there are also stories of recovery.

For example, after a struggle with alcohol, cocaine, and prescription painkillers, singer Elton John entered rehab and became a recovery advocate. Actor Samuel L. Jackson also experienced an addiction to cocaine, until rehab turned his life around.

Conclusion

From far away, it may seem like celebrities live perfect lives. However, their spotlight also exposes them to particular risks of substance use disorder. Wealth and proximity to substances such as cocaine put them directly in harm’s way. Simultaneously, that very same wealth and fame gives them greater access to care.

Celebrities may struggle with substance use disorder in the public eye, but anyone can have an addiction, and not everyone has access to the help they need. If you or a loved one is struggling with substance use disorder, Never Alone Recovery can help.
